Your Experience
Nestled just a short distance from the Colosseum in Rome lies the 12th-century Basilica of San Clemente and its ancient site. These two hidden treasures offer more than 2,000 years of history spread across three underground floors that were only discovered in 1860 following a flood. This event led an Irish Dominican Roman Catholic priest, who was also an archaeologist, to uncover the space.
Explore up to 100 feet below ground even though excavations are ongoing. The lowest level features a fourth-century basilica, which had been forgotten by the time a new basilica was constructed above it in the 12th century. Deeper still lies a Mithraic temple from antiquity with its altar.
