Taormina's timeless theater

Annually, crowds flock to Taormina's Ancient Theater, drawn by its rich history and the beauty of this ancient relic. Carved into Sicilian hills, this well-preserved testament to Ancient Greece and Rome, initially constructed by Philistides in the 3rd century BC, underwent extensive Roman renovations. It was transformed over the centuries, serving as a venue for classical plays and later as an amphitheater for gladiatorial combat.

The ancient Amphitheater offers breathtaking views of the Bay of Naxos to the south and the Strait of Messina with the Calabrian coast to the north. The structure itself comprises 3 sections: the stage, the orchestra, and the cavea. Two spacious side rooms flank the stage and stalls. Back then, it accommodated around 10,000 spectators (today, the capacity is 4,500). This venue continues to host opera and theater performances, standing strong over 2,000 years after its inception.

You can discover fragments of 3rd century BC painted plaster, Gymnasium remnants, and Greek inscriptions like the Strategists' tables in the Theatre. Roman relics include a calendar, consuls' lists by the baths, and a 2nd-century AD sarcophagus, a stone coffin, adorned with inscriptions, used to hold and protect the remains of the deceased.

• On the first Sunday of the month admission to sites in Eastern Sicily is free of charge and tickets will only be issued on site, at the ticket offices. Tickets can only be used on the date/time chosen at the time of purchase. Admission will be free of charge also the 4th of November.
