From the mid-Edo period onwards, kimono designs have undergone a rich development thanks to the Yuzen dyeing technique, which allows for delicate and gorgeous expression. This exhibition will explore the "secret" of the unique charm of kimonos, which have a flatness like a painting that allows the entire pattern to be appreciated when unfolded, yet beautifully adorn the three-dimensional human body when worn, through kimonos from the 19th century onwards, Yuzen fabrics, sketches and designs, template books, and three-dimensional crafts from Kyoto of the same period. Another highlight is the wide variety of Yuzen textiles on display, which were created in an attempt to create trends from the Meiji to Taisho periods, including traditional Japanese patterns, imported motifs, and designs that incorporated the artistic trends of the time. This exhibition was made possible with the special cooperation of Senso, a Kyoto-based yuzen dyeing company that is celebrating its 470th anniversary this year. It is also a rare opportunity to see a part of their extensive archive all in one place.
