Your experience at the Roman Agora

In ancient Athens' bustling marketplace, explore the Roman Agora with a multilingual audio guide. This tool enlivens tales of past traders, travelers, and scholars who convened beneath its grand marble gate and iconic Tower of the Winds.

Getting started on your journey

Your ticket will be sent via email—download both the app and audio guide to your smartphone in advance for offline access. Upon arrival at the Roman Agora's entrance, simply put on headphones and head to a self-paced exploration into ancient Athens' daily life.

Athena’s grand gateway

Begin your tour at the impressive Gate of Athena Archegetis, crafted from marble as a gift to Athens by Julius Caesar and Augustus. This once main entryway featured towering Doric columns that signified prosperity during Roman rule. As you listen to your guide's narration, envision merchants, philosophers, and citizens passing through this gate into the Agora’s heart.

Timekeepers of antiquity

Moving on, visit the octagonal Tower of the Winds—an ancient 'clock' that combined sundials, a water clock, and reliefs depicting eight wind gods. Your guide explains how Athenians used this tower not only to tell time but also for direction, weather forecasts, and as an early fusion of science with myth.

Markets, fountains, and everyday tales

Continue past the fountain house that once supplied water to a lively market and explore the Vespasianae public latrines. These reveal Rome's practical approach to civic life. Observe remnants of ancient shops where both goods and gossip were exchanged. The audio tour vividly narrates stories, portraying the marketplace as not just a commercial center but also a social hub.

Layers of history with Acropolis views

Your visit concludes at the 15th-century Mosque of the Conqueror, built during Ottoman times atop Roman marketplace ruins. This site served various roles—from worship to museum and storage—and reflects Athens' diverse cultural heritage. With a view of the Acropolis above, it unites Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman legacies in one remarkable location.
