Make the most of your K’gari escape with this 3-day tour—swim in freshwater lakes, drive a 4WD, hike through rainforests, visit historic shipwrecks, and enjoy two nights of beachside camping.

Getting started

Your day kicks off early at 7:00 am with a meet-up at Freedom Hostel in Rainbow Beach. After a quick safety briefing and driving instructions, you'll store your luggage and catch the ferry to K'gari by 9:30 am.

What to expect

Day 1

  • 75 Mile Beach & 4WD Driving: Cruise down K'gari's famous sand highway, running parallel to the Pacific Ocean. Keep an eye out for wild dingoes and enjoy sweeping ocean views and towering sand dunes as you drive.
  • Lake McKenzie: Dive into the crystal-clear waters of this iconic lake, surrounded by silica sand beaches. It’s perfect for a swim, relaxation, or sunbathing by the shoreline.

Day 2

  • Eli Creek: Take a refreshing float through this fast-flowing freshwater stream. With millions of litres of water flowing into the ocean every hour, it’s a fun and rejuvenating stop before heading to the shipwreck.
  • Maheno Shipwreck: Explore the haunting SS Maheno shipwreck, once a luxury liner and WWI hospital ship. Learn about its fascinating history and snap some photos of its rusted remains.
  • Indian Head: Climb to this stunning lookout for 360-degree views of the island and ocean. It’s the perfect spot for spotting dolphins and sea turtles.
  • Champagne Pools: Take a dip in the natural rock pools, where ocean waves crash into them, creating bubbly “champagne” effects.

Day 3

  • Lake Wabby: Hike across towering sand dunes to this deep, green lake tucked at the edge of the forest, perfect for a refreshing dip.
  • Return ferry & drop-off: After a tasty lunch, head back to the ferry for your return trip to Rainbow Beach, where you’ll arrive between 3:30pm–4:30pm.
