In Takachiho, an old railway has been given new life – the Takachiho Sightseeing Train. The open-top carriages slowly pull out of Takachiho Station, traveling along the original Takachiho Railway, taking you on a journey amidst mountains and seas of clouds.
The most breathtaking part is crossing the Takachiho Bridge, Japan's highest railway bridge. The bridge deck is 105 meters above the valley floor, overlooking winding streams, terraced fields, and small villages below, with distant mountains stretching into the distance. The mountain breeze blows in your face, making you feel as if you are floating in the sky.
As the seasons change, the scenery along the way is unique: cherry blossoms in spring, greenery in summer, maple leaves in autumn, and snow in winter, making every ride a one-of-a-kind experience.
Takachiho Gorge is a valley formed by the volcanic eruption of Mount Aso long ago. Its distinctive features include sheer cliffs on both sides, the 17-meter-high Manai Falls, and three bridges spanning the same gorge, adding to its beauty.
Manai Falls, one of Japan's 100 Best Waterfalls, is a renowned waterfall and a symbol of Takachiho Gorge. According to mythology, a god named Amamura Kumo-no-Mikoto, due to a lack of water in the area, moved water to this location, which is now known as "Amamana-i." Legend has it that the water gushing from the well became the waterfall and flowed downwards.
Takachiho Gorge Autumn Foliage Season (Mid-to-Late November): The autumn leaves in Takachiho Gorge typically reach their peak viewing period from mid-to-late November. Due to the gorge's high altitude and significant temperature differences between day and night, the leaves turn red earlier than in Miyazaki City and other areas. The gorge's autumn leaves are reflected in the water—the basalt cliffs and the cascading Manai Waterfall are particularly magnificent against the backdrop of deep red and golden maple leaves, especially in the early morning or afternoon when the sunlight is at an angle, creating a picturesque scene.
Mount Aso, located in northeastern Kumamoto Prefecture, Kyushu, is a famous active volcano in Japan, boasting a caldera landscape rarely seen in the world. It is also one of the few attractions offering close-up views of an active volcano. Visitors can look down upon the crater from above, gazing at the plumes of white smoke rising from it, allowing their journey to experience the awe-inspiring power and spectacular beauty of nature.
Aso-san Grassland is a vast grassland located at the northern foot of Mount Eboshi. In the center of the grassland is a pool formed by rainwater, and cattle and horses graze freely. Throughout the year, you can see various different scenes. Strolling leisurely across this 20,000-hectare expanse of green grassland, watching the free-roaming cattle and sheep, and breathing in the fresh mountain air will refresh your mind and give you the illusion of being in a fairyland.
Interested in experiencing horseback riding amidst the magnificent natural beauty of Aso? Experienced staff will lead the way, ensuring a safe ride even for children and first-time riders. Enjoy the gentle breeze and a peaceful stroll with your horse. Kusasenri boasts a prime location, allowing you to appreciate the wonders of nature, gaze at the towering volcanic plumes of smoke, and experience the thrill of horseback riding across the lush green grasslands.
Takachiho Shrine, located in Takachiho Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, is one of the most representative ancient shrines in the area. Legend has it that it was built over 1900 years ago and enshrines deities such as "Takachiho Imperial God" and "Ten Shrines Great Myojin," and is considered the head shrine protecting the Takachiho region. The shrine grounds are filled with ancient trees, most notably the approximately 800-year-old "Momoto Sugi" (couple cedar). It is said that couples holding hands and circling the tree three times can pray for marital harmony, successful relationships, and family happiness, attracting many worshippers. Furthermore, the shrine is famous for its Takachiho Yakagura (Night Kagura). Yakagura is a traditional Kagura dance with over 800 years of history, depicting the story of Amaterasu and Ama-no-Iwato (Heavenly Rock Cave) from Japanese mythology. Held annually from November to February, it takes place throughout the town, with the shrine serving as an important stage. Takachiho Shrine is not only a center of faith but also a must-visit destination for tourists seeking to experience the mythological culture and natural atmosphere of Takachiho.
