Albertina Modern brings Vienna’s vibrant art scene to life, showcasing post-war masterpieces by Austrian pioneers and international icons in one inspiring space.

Getting started

Albertina Modern is located at Karlsplatz 5, just a 10-minute walk from the main Albertina Museum and steps from Vienna’s State Opera. The entrance is through the historic Künstlerhaus building, a stunning 19th-century landmark reimagined for contemporary art.

After a quick security check, head inside to the spacious, light-filled lobby where you can collect your audio guide, if selected.

A celebration of Austrian creativity & global icons

Inside, the galleries unfold like a timeline of modern thought and expression. You’ll see how Austria’s post-war artists, from Maria Lassnig’s expressive self-portraits to Arnulf Rainer’s layered abstractions, shaped the country’s cultural identity.

Nearby, international legends like Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, and Georg Baselitz bring a global dimension to the collection, creating a vivid conversation between local innovation and worldwide influence.

Your audio guide will highlight these crosscurrents, how Lassnig pioneered body-awareness painting decades before it entered mainstream dialogue, or how Richter’s blurred photo-realism questions what 'truth' looks like in modern art.

Modern art in motion

Albertina Modern’s beating heart lies in the Essl and Jablonka collections, two of Europe’s most significant private holdings of post-war and contemporary art. Together, they offer an immersive view of artistic rebellion and reinvention.

From pop art and Neo-Expressionism to conceptual installations and video works, each gallery introduces a new way of seeing. You’ll find pieces that challenge convention, some playful, some deeply introspective, all united by a sense of freedom and experimentation that defines the modern era.

Contemporary voices & changing exhibitions

Albertina Modern never stands still. Its rotating exhibitions showcase living artists and current movements shaping today’s creative landscape, from multimedia installations to thought-provoking photography and sculpture.

Whether you’re exploring bold new perspectives or revisiting familiar masters, every visit offers something fresh.

If you’ve purchased the combo ticket, you can continue your journey at the main Albertina Museum or the peaceful Albertina Klosterneuburg to experience the full scope of Austrian art, past and present.
