Opened in 1895, Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse was constructed using local limestone by M. C. Davies’s company. Standing at 39 meters in height, it holds the distinction of being the tallest lighthouse on mainland Australia, and is located at the most south-westerly point of the continent. The lighthouse oversees the meeting point of the Indian and Southern Oceans, and continues to operate to this day.

One of the highlights in the area is the Interpretive Center, which is housed in one of the original lighthouse keepers’ cottages. Here, you can delve into the lives and history of the various lighthouse keepers over the years. Between May and September, the lighthouse is also one of the best vantage points for spotting whales in the ocean.

At the end of your tour, you can visit the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse Cafe to enjoy some light refreshments or delicious coffee.

Explore Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse

Your tour stops at Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse where you can climb its 54-meter-high tower built in 1895. The lighthouse stands on the most westerly point of the Australian mainland and is part of a larger complex that includes a museum showcasing maritime artifacts from the early 20th century, such as lanterns and foghorns dating back to 1903. Visitors spend approximately an hour exploring these exhibits while learning about the lives of lighthouse keepers who once resided in this remote location. The lighthouse itself is unique due to its distinctive red-and-white-striped design and powerful beam visible up to 25 nautical miles out at sea, making it a crucial navigational aid for ships traveling along Australia's southern coast.

Discover Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse Museum

At the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse museum, guests can delve into the history of this iconic landmark and its importance to maritime safety. Established in 1895, the museum houses a collection of over 200 artifacts including original documents, photographs, and equipment used by lighthouse keepers during the early years of operation. Visitors spend about half an hour browsing through these exhibits, gaining insight into the challenges faced by those who maintained the light under harsh weather conditions.
