Flowers bloom every season in the garden, making this garden that was loved by feudal lords for generations even more beautiful.

Oyakuen's garden and structures cover about 1.7 hectares and at the center, you will find a large stroll garden with a pond that is shaped like the kanji character for "heart". Here, you can spend a relaxing and healing time as you marvel at the passage of time and the changes of the seasons.

The medicinal herb garden was created by Masatsune Hoshina, the second feudal lord of the Aizu Domain, to save the people of the domain from epidemics. It came to be called Oyakuen after Masakata Matsudaira, the third feudal lord of the Aizu Domain, planted Korean ginseng in that garden and encouraged the citizens to grow it as well. About 400 kinds of medicinal herbs and trees have been passed down through generations and continue to be protected in this garden to this day.

Get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life by taking a walk and interacting with history and nature. Learn about history, shop for herbal tea and local products from Aizu, and enjoy your time at Oyakuen.

What to Expect
Oyakuen covers about 1.7 hectares and at its center is a large stroll garden with a pond that is shaped like the kanji character for "heart". Enveloped in a quiet and elegant atmosphere, it is a place where you will get to see plants from all four seasons in one place, condensing Japan's beauty into one area. Generations of Aizu Matsudaira feudal lords made the Aizu culture flourish here in Oyakuen. Its history goes back around 600 years. After Morihisa Ashina, the military governor of the Aizu Domain, built a villa in this area during the Muromachi period, Masayuki Hoshina, the founder of the Aizu Matsudaira Domain, maintained the villa as a daimyo (feudal lord) garden. A medicinal herb garden was later built in the property to save the people of the domain from epidemics and to study herbs used in the prevention and treatment of diseases. About 300 kinds of medicinal herbs and trees have been passed down through generations and continue to be protected in the garden to this day. Please spend a relaxing and healing time here as you marvel at the passage of time and the changes of the seasons.
