The Shenshuping Base of the Wolong Giant Panda Garden is located in Gengda Town, Wolong Nature Reserve, at an altitude of 1,700 meters, covering an area of 150 hectares. It is an ideal place to "pet the pandas" with fewer people and more cats. This is a world-class giant panda research center integrating giant panda breeding, research, rewilding training and release research, as well as public education and high-end scientific observation.
The base has a total building area of 19,844.51 square meters and houses more than 90 giant pandas, making it the largest captive giant panda breeding base in China and abroad, accounting for approximately 50% of the world's total captive giant panda population. The base is divided into three functional areas: giant panda breeding, rewilding training, and public wildlife education. It is equipped with 59 panda enclosures, a visitor reception center, research and office buildings, a science education center, a veterinary hospital, and a rewilding training area for captive giant pandas, among other supporting facilities. The establishment of the base not only provides a comfortable habitat for captive giant panda populations worldwide but also offers the public an excellent giant panda viewing experience.
At the Wolong Shenshuping Base, over 90 adorable pandas live carefree lives. They spend their days climbing trees, rolling around, eating, and playing with their friends. Like many other mammals, the captive pandas here are very friendly towards those who feed them, treating their caretakers like family, acting cute, and asking for cuddles. After eating and drinking their fill, the panda cubs will seize the opportunity and use all their charm to cling to their caretakers! A common tactic is to hug their caretakers' legs and feet tightly, just like a child begging for a hug. Although the panda cubs are small, they are quite strong; prying off even one of their arms or legs is very difficult, and once you manage to pry one off, the other arm often wraps around you. Once you're entangled by a panda cub, it's not so easy to escape! This is why panda keepers wear jumpsuits; otherwise, they might accidentally rip their pants with a "rip" sound, feeling a chill on their legs... Having such clingy cubs can be quite frustrating for keepers! It's precisely because of pandas' affectionate nature, coupled with people's natural affinity for these furry, round animals, that panda cubs have become "family darlings." But please don't underestimate pandas as wild animals!
